About the Breed:
The Portuguese Water Dog, casually called the PWD, is a hard-working, energetic and athletic dog breed. Though the breed is not right for everyone, this lively and robust dog can make an excellent companion.
The PWD has a full, thick coat that is either curly or wavy. Frequent grooming is required to maintain the breed's beautiful coat. This includes hair brushing several times per week and routine haircuts. Because of its coat type, the PWD is considered a hypoallergenic dog breed.
Due to their high activity levels, PWDs are best suited to homes where they can get plenty of exercise, attention and training. This breed is a worker at heart and needs to be kept busy and challenged, both mentally and physically.
With proper training and socialization, Portuguese Water Dogs can make great family pets. They usually get along well with children and are known to be incredibly loyal, loving and active.
