History:

The Brittany, once called the Brittany Spaniel, was named for its place of origin in France. Developed out of general bird dogs, the breed seems to be most closely related to the Welsh Springer Spaniel. While early history of the Brittany is not exactly clear, it might date back over 1000 years. However, the earliest evidence of the breed was depicted in paintings during the 17th century.

The Brittany was developed into a dog that shared the qualities of a spaniel and a pointer, and it has a solid history as an excellent gundog and show dog. The breed was brought to the US in 1931 and recognized by the AKC in 1934.

Health Problems:

Responsible breeders strive to maintain the highest breed standards as established by kennel clubs like the AKC. Dogs bred by these standards are less likely to inherit health conditions. About the Breed:

The Brittany is a very energetic and athletic medium-sized dog. It is known especially for its enthusiasm and cheerfulness.

The soft, thick coat of the Brittany may be wavy or flat and requires minimal attention. This breed usually has some feathering on the legs and fringe on the ears and should be brushed out regularly in order to maintain its beauty and keep it mat-free. A basic groomingroutine should be sufficient. The tail of this breed is sometimes docked soon after birth.

Due to its very high activity level, the Brittany should get plenty of exercise each day. This will help keep the dog happy and offer an outlet for all of that energy. In addition,obedience training is essential for the Brittany. It will help stimulate the dog's mind and properly filter the extra energy.
